About this tool

Most resizing happens because something else demands a number. A form wants the photograph at 200 × 230 pixels, a listing wants a square thumbnail, a document wants a picture that is not four thousand pixels wide. The awkward part is that your picture has proportions of its own, and the requested box usually does not match them, so something has to give.

This tool makes that choice explicit rather than deciding for you. Fit inside keeps every part of the picture and every proportion, and quietly reduces your box to the picture’s own shape — ask for 1000 × 1000 with a portrait photo and you get 750 × 1000, with no white bars added. Fill and crop honours your exact numbers by enlarging the picture until it covers the box and cutting away what hangs over, taken from the centre, so heads near the top of a frame can lose their crown. Stretch honours your numbers too and distorts the picture to do it, which is occasionally what you want for a banner and almost never what you want for a face.

The width and height boxes are seeded with the uploaded picture’s real dimensions the moment it loads. That is a small thing that saves a lot of confusion, because you can see whether you are scaling down by half or by a factor of ten before you commit, and you can edit one number while leaving the other where it was.

Everything runs on your device. The picture is decoded, redrawn onto a canvas at the new size with smoothing turned up, and re-encoded at high quality. No upload, no account, no waiting for somebody’s server to get to your file.

What this tool does not do

  • It cannot aim at a file size in KB. Resize first, then use the compress-to-KB tool.
  • Enlarging cannot add detail that is not in the original.
  • Sides are capped at 16,000 px and the total at 32 megapixels.
  • It never adds white padding. “Fit inside” shrinks the box to the picture instead.
  • It verifies nothing about your form. Check the required dimensions on the portal yourself.

Common questions

I asked for 800 × 600 and got 800 × 450. Why?

Because “fit inside, keep proportions” is doing its job. It treats your numbers as a box the picture must fit within, then shrinks the box to the picture's own shape so there are no white bars down the sides. A 16:9 photo inside an 800 × 600 box comes out 800 × 450.

How do I get exactly the dimensions I typed?

Two ways. “Fill and crop from the centre” gives you exactly that size by scaling the picture up until it covers the box and trimming the overflow, which loses the edges. “Stretch to exact dimensions” also gives exactly that size but squashes the picture to fit, which looks wrong on faces. If the edges matter, crop deliberately with the cropper first.

Will making the image bigger make it sharper?

No. Enlarging spreads the pixels you already have across more space and softens the picture. Resizing up is fine for meeting a minimum dimension on a form; it will not recover detail the camera never captured.

Does resizing reduce the file size?

Usually a lot, since a smaller picture has fewer pixels to store. But you cannot aim at a number here. If your form gives a KB limit, resize first and then run the result through the compress-to-KB tool.

My PNG's transparent background turned white.

JPG cannot hold transparency, so it is filled with white before saving. Choose PNG or WebP as the output format and the transparency survives.

Can I resize several photos at once?

Not here — one image per run. For a set of files that all need the same treatment, run them one after another; nothing is uploaded, so each one is quick.
